CRACKDOWN ON COUNTERFEITS IN THAILAND: JOINT CEREMONY DESTROYS MILLIONS WORTH OF FAKE GOODS

On 31 August 2023 the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP), the Customs Department, the Royal Thai Police, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC, a unit of the Royal Thai Army) and a few other government agencies jointly held a counterfeit goods destruction ceremony (officially called “the Destruction Ceremony of Intellectual Property Infringing Goods”) at the Royal Thai Army’s 7th Air Defense Regiment’s complex in Bangkok. The ceremony was presided over by DIP Director-General Vuttikrai Leewiraphan and participated by representatives of IP owners, IP agents, diplomats from several embassies and members of the press. In total, 1,253,529 items, valued at more than THB 600,000,000 (about USD 17,650,000) were marked for destruction.

A large quantity of the seized counterfeit goods was displayed and then initially destroyed using cutting tools, shredding machines and a bulldozer. They were then transported to an industrial incinerator to be burned.

Domnern Somgiat & Boonma was invited to participated in the ceremony as counterfeits of a number of brands in our care are among the counterfeits marked for destruction. Photographs that we took during the ceremony are shown below.
