Domain Name Registration
In Thailand, there is an organization named Thailand Network Information Center (THNIC) which registers domain names for domestic entities. Domain names registered with THNIC end with “” if they are academic institutions, “” if profit-oriented entities, “” if government agencies, “” if network service providers and “” if miscellaneous (mostly non-profit organizations).

According to THNIC, registration of a domain name does not confer any legal rights to that name and any disputes between parties over the right to use a particular name are to be settled between the parties using normal legal methods. We interpret this as meaning that if the name in dispute is, say, a trademark, the parties must use the trademark law to deal with the dispute.

For a company to register a domain name ending with “” with THNIC, it must submit to the THNIC a valid Thai trademark registration certificate of the word to be registered as a domain name. This requirement can be waived if the company has a presence in Thailand. “Having a presence in Thailand” means being registered in Thailand under Thai law as:
  1. A Thai company;
  2. A foreign company;
  3. A subsidiary or local branch office of a foreign company.
A foreign company not registered in Thailand under Thai law which wants to register a domain name ending with “” must set up a subsidiary or branch office here in Thailand.
